Unter den Augen der deutschen Zivilbevölkerung arbeiteten sie in allen Bereichen der Gesellschaft – in großen, mittleren und kleinen Firmen in allen Branchen – von der Tischlerei, Bäckerei, Brauerei bis zum Bekleidungsgeschäft, in kommunalen Einrichtungen wie der Müllabfuhr und in der Landwirtschaft, auf kirchlichen Friedhöfen bis hin zu Privathaushalten. Alleine im Berliner Stadtgebiet befanden sich etwa 3.000 Lager für Zwangsarbeiterinnen und Zwangsarbeiter. Als Archiv-, Ausstellungs- und Lernort informiert das Dokumentationszentrum insbesondere über die Geschichte und Dimension der größten Gruppe der NS-Zwangsarbeit. Rund 8,4 Millionen Menschen wurden als „zivile“ Zwangsarbeiterinnen und Zwangsarbeiter aus den besetzten Gebieten Europas in das Deutsche Reich verschleppt.
