  "abstract" : [ "\"Im Jahr 2018 jährt sich das Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs zum einhundertsten Mal. Im öffentlichen Raum Münsters ist dieser Krieg bis heute an etlichen Orten in Form von Kriegerdenkmälern präsent – knapp die Hälfte aller 23 Kriegerdenkmäler der Stadt entstand zwischen 1922 und 1930. Kriegerdenkmäler sind Quellen und Zeugen ihrer Zeit. Sie gedenken der Gefallenen als Helden, bieten den Betrachtern ein Identifikationsangebot mit den Intentionen des Denkmals an und stellen einen Erinnerungsort zur Verfügung, wo der Toten als Toter gedacht werden kann. Auf heutige Betrachterinnen und Betrachter wirken diese steinernen Zeugen des Umgangs unserer Vorfahren mit den Gefallenen und dem Krieg – sobald sie bewusst wahrgenommen werden – irritierend und befremdend. Unverhohlen rufen sie zur Revanche auf und heroisieren häufig den Tod auf dem Schlachtfeld. Eine tiefergehende Auseinandersetzung mit den „Ehrenmälern“ erscheint überfällig. Nach der Erfahrung von zwei Weltkriegen und der Teilung Deutschlands muss ein anderer Weg des Gedenkens gesucht werden. Nicht zuletzt stellen unkommentierte Kriegerdenkmäler wie der „Stehende Soldat“ im münsterschen Schlossgarten, der Rache schwört, oder das „Dreizehner-Denkmal“ mit seinen Ergänzungen aus der NS-Zeit einen deutlichen Widerspruch dar zur Selbstbezeichnung Münsters als Friedensstadt. Die vorliegende Publikation beschäftigt sich mit acht der prominentesten Kriegerdenkmäler. \"" ],
