Diese hatte in NRW einen besonders hohen Stellenwert, weil durch sie notwendige Zweckbauten eine Nobilitierung erfahren sollten. Die Erwartungen an die Kunst am Bau fanden ihren Ausdruck in Auftragsarbeiten, die im Verhältnis zu sog. freien Arbeiten wenig geschätzt werden. Diesen Umstand hat der Autor zum Anlass genommen, einige beispielhafte Werke auf der Grundlage des Verständnisses von Kunst am Bau in NRW im letzten Drittel des 20.
