Die Diskussion, die zum Teil ethische Dimensionen angenommen hat, befindet sich jedoch in einer Sackgasse aus wissenschaftlichen Theorien und alltagstheoretischen Mythen. Sandra Beaufaÿs hinterfragt die heutige Kontroverse vor dem Hintergrund der historischen Entwicklung der Geburtshilfe. Die Autorin untersucht den Prozeß der geburtshilflichen Professionalisierung mit Hilfe der Foucaultschen Machtanalyse. Dabei wird deutlich, daß dieser Prozeß im Zusammenhang steht mit bestimmten Normen, aufgrund derer die Betroffenen ihre aktuelle Situation beurteilen, und in welche Machtverhältnisse sie mit diesem Urteil verstrickt sind.
