Gold und Silber bestimmten das liturgische Wirken, dienten dem Gotteshaus als Schmuck und schufen einen Abglanz des Himmels auf Erden. Wie war das mit dem Armutsgebot der Evangelien zu vereinbaren? Welche Motive führten zu dieser Akkumulation von Kostbarkeiten in den Gotteshäusern? Welche Bedeutung hatte dieser Kirchenschatz im Leben der Menschen? // Dieses Buch geht der Frage nach der komplexen Rolle des Kirchenschatzes in der mittelalterlichen Gesellschaft nach, mit dem Ziel eine neue kulturhistorische Betrachtungsweise des Phänomens Kirchenschatz zu erreichen. Dies gelingt über eine umfassende Kontextualisierung der Kirchenschätze hinsichtlich ihrer Geschichte, ihrer besonderen Materialität und der vorherrschenden immateriellen Schatzvorstellungen des Mittelalters. // Die theoretische Annährung an das Phänomen Kirchenschatz wird ergänzt durch die exemplarische Untersuchung des mittelalterlichen Kathedralschatzes von Münster. Dabei können gerade aus der Zusammenschau verschiedenster Schriftquellen und der materiellen Überlieferung, namentlich den circa 60 noch heute erhaltenen mittelalterlichen Goldschmiedewerken, tiefergehende Erkenntnisse und ein neuer Blick nicht nur auf den Kathedralschatz von Münster gewonnen werden." ],
