Bis vor wenigen Jahrzehnten ergänzten sich Menschen, Arbeitstiere und Maschinen. Heute dominiert in der Arbeitswelt die Technik, während in der Freizeit Tiere oft eine besondere Bedeutung erhalten. Gewandelte Ernährungsgewohnheiten spiegeln ebenfalls die Veränderungen der Beziehungen zu den Tieren wider. Das Buch beleuchtet den Wandel der Beziehungen von Mensch und Tier in Westfalen und dem Ruhrgebiet von der Industrialisierung bis heute anhand ausgewählter Beispiele. Es spannt einen Bogen von westfälischen Wildpferden über die Grubenpferde, die Brieftaubenzucht und Hausschweinehaltung im Ruhrgebiet bis zu gegenwärtigen Trends wie Urban Bee Keeping, Pferdemädchen und Tierschutzdebatten. Die Beiträge folgen den Spuren der Tiere im geteilten Lebensraum und blicken auf den Wandel der Einstellungen zu Wildtieren und Nutztieren. Sie thematisieren die Interaktionen und Praktiken des Zusammenlebens sowie die Reflexionen in der Populärkultur in der Geschichte und in der Gegenwart. Als Begleitband zu gleichnamigen Ausstellung des Westfälischen Landesmuseums für Industriekultur vereint das Buch acht Expertenbeiträge und 50 vertiefende Exponatgeschichten." ],
