Dieses endet 1871 mit der Verfassung des Deutschen Reiches, die die endgültige rechtliche Gleichstellung der Juden enthielt, ohne dass diese jedoch de facto vollständig verwirklicht wird. 1 1871 wird auch die wissenschaftliche Geographie als eigenes Fach an den deutschen Hochschulen begründet. Alfred Philippson gehört zu der Generation, die als erste die Möglichkeit hat, sich entscheiden zu können, Geographie zu studieren und „zum Geographen zu werden\"2• Philippson wird zu einem der bedeutendsten Vertreter der wissenschaftlichen Geographie in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Seine geomorphologischen Studien sind wegweisend, seine Länderkunden haben Bedeutung weit über das Fach hinaus. Sein Wirkungskreis mit Forschungen, Publikationen und wissenschaftspolitischen Funktionen in der Geographie belegt dies eindrucksvoll. In seiner Bonner Zeit etabliert Philippson eines der modernsten zeitgenössischen geographischen Institute. Hans Böhm, Chronist der Geschichte der Geographie in Bonn, wies häufiger darauf hin, dass das Bonner Institut etwa von Philippsons Auf- und Ausbau von Bibliothek und Kartensammlung bis heure profitiert. Dies alles ist Grund genug, den Hörsaal nach ihm zu benennen." ],
