Für Hendrik Streeck stand deshalb fest, dass man nicht tatenlos zuschauen konnte, wie sich das Infektionsgeschehen entwickelte. Vielmehr stellte er sich die Frage: Was können wir dazu beitragen, das Virus zu bekämpfen, seine Ausbreitung einzudämmen? Antworten darauf fand er bei seiner Studie in Gangelt im Kreis Heinsberg, denn dort gab es zu dieser Zeit eine solche Dichte an Infizierten wie nirgendwo sonst in Deutschland, und da das öffentliche Leben dort weitestgehend zum Erliegen gekommen war, ließ sich das Infektionsgeschehen gut nachvollziehen. Dadurch bot sich die einmalige Gelegenheit, kurz- und langfristig Wissen auf vielen Ebenen zu generieren, um damit das neuartige Virus und das Pandemiegeschehen besser einschätzen zu können: Wie breitete sich das Virus aus, welches Ausmaß hatte das Infektionsgeschehen überhaupt? Wie verhielt es sich mit der Immunität? Und was machte dieses Virus mit dem Menschen, was waren die Symptome, und wie reagierte das Immunsystem? »Hotspot« bietet einen spannenden Einblick in die aktuelle Forschung und liefert zugleich neueste Erkenntnisse zu Sars-CoV-2 und dem Pandemiegeschehen." ],
