Seither hat sich eine spannende Entwicklung dieser Verhüllungstücher im sakralen Raum während der Fastenzeit ergeben. Viele werden von rheinischen oder westfälischen Künstlerinnen und Künstlern gestaltet, andere von Arbeitsgruppen in den Pfarrgemeinden oder auch in Kindergärten.Der ausgewiesene Kenner mittelalterlicher kirchlicher Quellen Rudolf Suntrup zeigt Entstehung, liturgischen Gebrauch und Funktion der Fastentücher und deren Bildprogramme in Mittelalter und Früher Neuzeit auf. Alois Döring schildert den geschichtlichen Wandel seit der Reformation, legt heutige konfessionelle Gebrauchsfunktionen dar und erörtert Fragen zeitgenössischer Kunst im sakralen Raum. Im Mittelpunkt steht die umfangreiche Dokumentation von über 120 Fastentüchern und Fastenzeitinstallationen des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts, die der Autor auf breiter Quellenbasis erstellt hat. Das Buch bietet erstmals eine breit angelegte Darstellung der Verhüllungspraxis im Rheinland und in Westfalen im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert.
