Die Kunde der Ereignisse verbreitete sich schnell und sorgte für Konflikte zwischen der preußischen Provinzialregierung, empiriegeleitete Mediziner einerseits und der Bistumsleitung Münster und romantischen Netzwerken andererseits. Dabei nutzten alle Parteien den Dülmener Fall, um offene Fragen der Zeit zu diskutieren und eigene Herrschafts- und Zuständigkeitsansprüche über die Deutung des Falls durchzusetzen.
