  "abstract" : [ "Seit über 60 Jahren gehört die Erforschung gesellschaftlicher Führungsschichten zu den unverzichtbaren Grundlagen der Sozialgeschichte. Dabei stehen nicht nur die Lebensläufe einzelner Personen im Mittelpunkt, wie sie u. a. in der Neuen Deutschen Biographie erfasst wurden; vielmehr standen zunehmend die Netzwerke ganzer sozialer Gruppen im Vordergrund des Interesses sowie deren Bemühungen, in einem scheinbar erstarrten Gesellschaftssystem mit vermeintlich unüberwindbaren sozialen Schranken Kanäle für einen Aufstieg zu finden und zu nutzen.Im Zeitalter des Absolutismus, also im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert, betraf dies vor allem das Bürgertum, das schon seit dem Spätmittelalter die Bedeutung der Bildung durch den Besuch einer Universität erkannt hatte. Mit der Festigung der fürstlichen Machtstellung und deren bewusste Abgrenzung gegenüber dem landständischen Adel nach 1650 erkannten weite Kreise des Bürgertums, dass im Fürstendienst - zumindest nach zwei oder drei Generationen - ein sozialer Aufstieg möglich schien wie er bis dahin in sehr begrenzter Form nur im geistlichen Stand bekannt war. Dies war aber nur in einer familien- und generationenübergreifenden Form realisierbar. Der vorliegende Sammelband älterer und neuerer Arbeiten, die heute nur noch schwer zugänglich sind, zeigt diesen Prozess exemplarisch anhand der bürgerlichen Beamtenfamilien im südlichen und südöstlichen Teil des Herzogtums Berg unter der Herrschaft des Hauses Pfalz-Neuburg. Dabei wird deutlich, dass es den hochgradig versippten Beamtenfamilien zwar immer wieder gelang, den sozialen Aufstieg einzelner Mitglieder zu fördern, doch gelang es trotz großer Bemühungen nicht, sich - z. B. durch ein Konnubium mit dem sozial abgestiegenen landsässigen Adel oder die käufliche Übernahme eines Rittersitzes - als adelsgleicher Stand zu etablieren." ],
