Als die Kinder zur Sicherheit aufs Land gebracht werden und Millionen Deutsche ins Kino strömen, um Hans Albers als Münchhausen zu erleben. Als die Städte schon in Trümmern liegen, und noch immer getanzt wird. Als die NS-Vernichtungsmaschinerie auf Hochtouren läuft, die einen vom „Endsieg“ fantasieren und andere versuchen, sich der Diktatur entgegenzustellen. In einem Mosaik von Geschichten und Porträts, kunstvoll komponiert und glänzend recherchiert, lässt Hilmes das dramatische Jahr 1943 wieder lebendig werden. „Städte liegen in Trümmern, Hunderttausende sterben vor Stalingrad, Goebbels ruft den totalen Krieg aus: Da macht der 26-jährige Pianist Karlrobert Kreiten eine regimekritische Bemerkung – sechs Monate später wird er hingerichtet.
