Als Ausdruck sozialer Verhältnisse und Gegenstand politischer Auseinandersetungen hat das Wohnen einen zutiefst gesellschaftlichen Charakter. Im Spannungsfeld von Markt, Staat und Alltagspraxen spiegeln sich in den Wohnverhältnissen die grundlegenden Konflikte unserer Gesellschaft. Friedrich Engels hat sich in seinem 1872 veröffentlichtem Text \"Zur Wohnungsfrage\" mit den wohnungspolitischen Debatten seiner Zeit beschäftigt und die regelmäßigen Wohnungskrisen aus der Perspektive der Politischen Ökonomie analysiert. Viele Überlegungen sind bis heute aktuell und helfen, scheinbar spezifische Konstellationen der Stadtentwicklung als grundlegende Strukturprinzipien zu erkennen. Die Wohnungsfrage im 21. Jahrhundert zu stellen bedeutet aber, über Engels hinauszudenken. Feministische Ansätze zur Reproduktion von Geschlechterrollen in den Wohnverhältnissen, ökologische Herausforderungen der fortwährenden Urbanisierung und regulationstheoretische Überlegungen zur Reichweite von staatlichen Eingriffen in das Wohnungswesen prägen die wohnungspolitischen Diskussionen der letzten Dekaden und haben die klassische Wohnungsfrage um neue Facetten erweitert." ],
