In Kurorten wie Bad Eilsen, Bad Meinberg oder Baden-Baden begegnen sich seit dem 18. Jahrhundert Vorstellungen von Krankheit und Gesundheit, von Exklusion und Inklusion, Wandel und Beharrungskraft, Freizeit und Arbeit, Luxus und Austerität. Bis heute sind Kurorte wichtige Wirtschaftsfaktoren, Marker einer wechselvollen Tourismusgeschichte und Orte politischer Auseinandersetzung. Der Band behandelt politik-, wirtschafts-, sozial- und kulturgeschichtliche Aspekte: Wie veränderten Gesundheitskonzepte und politische Bedingungen die Kurorte? Welche sozialen Deutungen wurden mit ihnen verknüpft? Wie strahlten sie auf ihr Umfeld aus? Welche Gruppen nahmen am Kurleben teil? Worin bestanden dessen Schattenseiten? Diese und weitere Fragen werden anhand ausgewählter Fallstudien aus Schaumburg, Westfalen und anderen Regionen in Deutschland und Europa untersucht.
