Die Frau im Bonner Johannes-Hospital weiß, dass sie nur noch wenige Tage zu leben hat. Auf dem Sterbebett lässt sie Szenen ihres Lebens an sich vorbeiziehen. Gussie Zinsser ist 24, als sie den 19 Jahre älteren Witwer Konrad Adenauer heiratet und zur Stiefmutter seiner drei Kinder wird. Sie schenkt fünf Kindern das Leben, doch ihr Erstgeborener stirbt nach nur vier Tagen.
