Es möchte einen Beitrag zur Selbstidentifikation der kleinsten Landeskirche leisten, deren Existenz immer wieder angefragt ist, nimmt aber vor allem Anhalt als historisches Fallbeispiel in den Blick. Wie begegnete die Kirche den politischen und gesellschaftlichen Herausforderungen der Nachkriegszeit? Sie hatte an einer Vergangenheit zu tragen, in der sie das NS-System gestützt hatte. Zugleich wurde sie mit dem Herrschaftsanspruch der neuen Machthaber konfrontiert, die Religion und Kirche überwinden wollten. Wo passte die Kirche sich den neuen Machtverhältnissen an, wo lotete sie Freiräume ihres Handelns aus? Maßgeblich für die zeitliche Eingrenzung ist die Gründung des Bundes der Evangelischen Kirchen in der DDR 1969.
