  "abstract" : [ "Mit der umstrittenen Integration der Kunstgewerbeschule in die Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie wurde deren historisches Selbstverständnis als Lehranstalt der freien Künste in Frage gestellt. Zugleich ermöglichte sie Reformen, die in dem Buch erstmals ausführlich diskutiert werden. Die Kunstgewerbeschule hatte unter Peter Behrens und Wilhelm Kreis die Kunstausbildung aufgewertet und geriet dadurch in Konkurrenz zur Kunstakademie. Die Integration der Kunstgewerbeschule kurz vor Gründung des Bauhauses ermöglichte Reformen, die auf der Kooperation von freier und angewandter Kunst beruhten und den auf die Malerei fixierten Anspruch auf künstlerische Freiheit an der sozialen und ökonomischen Realität relativierten. Mit der Berufung fortschrittlicher Künstlern vor allem unter Walter Kaesbach (Direktor 1924–1933) fand die mit der \"Düsseldorfer Malerschule\" assoziierte Institution Anschluss an die neueste Kunst. Gleichzeitig lehrten noch immer Professoren, die vor 1910 eingestellt worden waren. Das Buch geht dem widersprüchlichen und produktiven Potential zwischen Tradition und Avantgarde nach. Es zeigt, dass eine Kunstausbildungsreform in der Weimarer Republik auch jenseits des Bauhauses und mit ähnlichen Mitteln und Zielen erfolgte." ],
