Das Buch bietet eine Alltagsgeschichte des 'Großbetriebs der Barmherzigkeit', in dem Menschen mit Epilepsie, mit Behinderungen und psychisch Kranke versorgt wurden. Die vorhandenen Patientenakten von 1924 bis 1949 werden erstmals inhaltlich wie quantitativ ausgewertet. Dargestellt werden Versorgung, Pflege und medizinische Behandlung der in Bethel untergebrachten Menschen, die Hinwendung der Anstaltsvertreter zum Nationalsozialismus, die Beteiligung an Zwangssterilisationen, die Abwehrversuche gegen die 'Euthanasie', die erhöhte Sterblichkeit im Krieg und in der Nachkriegszeit sowie der Umgang mit NS-Tätern.https://d-nb.info/1378389603" ],
