Im Zentrum stehen eindrucksvolle Darstellungen des Bergbaus: die harte Arbeit unter Tage, das enge Miteinander der Kumpel und die identitätsstiftende Rolle der Kohle für das Ruhrgebiet. Formal stehen die Zeichnungen Alfred Schmidts in der Tradition eines präzisen, zugleich expressiven Realismus. Anklänge an die Neue Sachlichkeit oder die Arbeiterfotografie der 1920er-Jahre sind evident, doch bleibt sein Zugriff eigenständig. Die Klarheit technischer Zeichnung – durch seine Tätigkeit als Industriedesigner erlernt und von Wissensdurst genährt – verbindet sich mit einer dichten, oft körperlich erfahrbaren Linienführung. Maschinen, Streben, Förderanlagen erscheinen nicht als abstrakte Konstruktionen, sondern als Widerlager menschlicher Arbeit. Der Mensch ist dabei nie Staffage, sondern stets Bezugspunkt der Darstellung. Alfred Schmidt verbindet Kunst, Industriegeschichte und gesellschaftliche Reflexion. Seine Arbeiten insistieren auf die Gleichzeitigkeit von Oberfläche und Tiefe – topografisch wie sozial. Gerade darin liegt ihre eigentliche Stärke: Sie ließen und lassen sichtbar werden, was unter der Oberfläche lag." ],
