Dieser erste westfälische Spielfilm, lange Zeit verschollen und nun in restaurierter Fassung wiederentdeckt, erzählt vor dem Hintergrund der Friedensverhandlungen von Münster und Osnabrück 1648 eine dramatische Geschichte um Krieg, Frieden, Intrigen und Liebe. Im Mittelpunkt stehen der fiktive Rittmeister Wolf von Dülken, die mutige Elsbeth und die geheimnisvolle Victorine de Brion – Figuren, die in ein Netz aus Spionage und Verrat verwickelt sind, während mythisch der Friedensreiter über das Geschehen wacht. In dieser Folge von „Untold Stories“ besprechen Prof. Dr. Markus Köster, Leiter des LWL- Medienzentrums, und Dr. Bernd Thier, Historiker am Stadtmuseum Münster drei Zeitschichten des Films: von einer historischen Einordnung der Filmhandlung und der Bedeutung des Friedensreiters als Symbolfigur über die Entstehungsgeschichte zwischen Krieg und Revolution, der zeitgenössischen Rezeption des innovativen Historienfilms bis zur Geschichte der Wiederauffindung." ],
