Die Militärseelsorger haben ihren Auftrag von der Kirche und üben ihre Tätigkeit  als Teil der kirchlichen Gesamtarbeit aus. Aus Gründen der Tradition der österr. Militärseelsorge sind Militärseelsorger zwar in der militärischen Struktur eingegliedert, unterstehen aber in kirchlichen Belangen dem Militärbischof. Darüber hinaus wirkt die Militärdiözese auch dort, wo österreichische Truppen für den Frieden im internationalen Einsatz stehen. Die Militärdiözese wird vom Militärbischof geleitet. Der Militärbischof ist einem Diözesanbischof gleichgestellt und gehört der Österr. Bischofskonferenz an. Als unmittelbare Instrumente für seine Leitungsaufgabe stehen ihm das Militärordinariat (oberste Dienststelle der Militärseelsorge im Bundesheer) und das Sekretariat des Militärbischofs (unmittelbare Dienststelle des Militärordinarius ohne Verankerung im Bundesheer) zur Verfügung. Seine Jurisdiktion ist mit jener des territorial zuständigen Diözesanbischofs kumulativ. Der Juriskdiktionsbereich des Militärbischofs erstreckt sich entsprechend der Apostolischen Konstitution \"Spirituali Curae Militum\" und den am 30. März 1989 erlassenen \"Statuten des Militärordinariates der Republik Österreich\" auf alle Angehörigen des Bundesheeres und der Heeresverwaltung sowie deren Familienangehörige und auf Präsenzdiener während ihres Wehrdienstes" ],
