Bereits ab 1945 widmete er sich dem Aufbau einer neuen Spezialsammlung von Salamandern und Molchen. 1970 endete seine Mitarbeit. 1951 wurde Freytag Redakteur beim Volk und Wissen Verlag in Ost-Berlin. 1954 wechselte er als Fachredakteur und später als stellvertretender Chefredakteur zum Akademie-Verlag Berlin. 1970 wurde er wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter im Rechenzentrum des Zentralinstituts für Molekularbiologie der Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin. 1978 Promition, 1983 Pensionierung." ],
