Nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs wirkte Georg Mierdel zunächst in der Industrie in der Tschechoslowakei und wurde 1953 stellvertretender Direktor im Institut für Gasentladungsphysik der Deutschen Akademie der Wissenschaften der DDR in Greifswald.
