In diesem Haus lebt jedoch eine Hexe, die eine Menschenfresserin ist. Als diese Hänsel braten will, schiebt Gretel die Hexe in den Ofen und die Geschwister gelangen nach Hause. In der Fassung von 1819 hilft ihnen eine Ente bei der Rückkehr; seit 1840 wird die Mutter durch eine Stiefmutter ersetzt. Die Namen Hänsel und Gretel verweisen auf die damals weit verbreitete Verwendung der Taufnamen Johannes und Margarete.
