Die erste Fassung von »Erwin und Elmire« haben kurz hintereinander Goethes Offenbacher Freund, der Seidenfabrikant J. Andre (1775), und die Herzogin-Mutter Anna Amalia (1777) vertont - jedoch mit mäßigem Erfolg. Erst mit der Aufführung durch Theobald Marchand in Frankfurt (1775) wurde das Stück positiv aufgenommen. Eine handschriftliche Fassung ist nicht erhalten." ],
